Did you grow up reading fairytales? If so, which were your favorites?

Magnificent pictures!  The story that affected me most was The Little Match Girl - which is not a fairytale at all, but a bit of gritty, ugly realism.  I don't know if I liked it best, but I certainly remember it best.

One of the facts that seems to be getting a lot of attention these days is that the original forms of many fairytales was pretty gruesome.  Somehow I suspect those were not the ones Einstein was thinking of!

I only vaguely remember the story of The Little Match Girl, I will have to reread it. (… Regarding the origins of fairy tales, I somewhat agree. Though, I do believe that both versions of a fairy tale serve different purposes. It's interesting to think about whether Einstein would recommend the edited versions or the originals. Personally, I'd guess the original.

One of my favorites was the Swan Lake. Ok, it's a ballet, but all the various animations and books made it a fairy tale! :)
